Samsung SDI Completes All

May 22, 2023May 22, 2023

Samsung SDI Co. has completed its pilot line for all-solid-state batteries and plans to begin producing samples in the second half of this year. The CEO of the South Korean battery maker, Choi Yoon-ho, made the announcement at an in-house event. The pilot line is located in Samsung SDI’s Suwon research and development center.

All-solid-state batteries are considered a game changer in the battery industry as they use a solid electrolyte instead of the liquid or gel electrolytes found in traditional lithium-ion batteries. This technology significantly reduces the risk of fires and offers a higher energy density, allowing for a longer driving range.

Samsung SDI has been making significant efforts to lead in solid-state battery technology. Construction of the pilot line began in March of last year, and the company is now ready to move forward with sample production in the second half of 2023. Samsung SDI aims to start commercial production of solid-state batteries in 2027.

In addition to solid-state batteries, Samsung SDI has also completed its mother line for 46-millimeter-wide cylindrical batteries. This line, located in the Cheonan plant, is now prepared to develop and produce new products on a large scale.

The company is diversifying its battery lineup by shifting from primarily manufacturing prismatic cells to producing the larger 46-mm-wide cylindrical cells. These larger cells are expected to perform significantly better than the existing 18-mm-wide or 21-mm-wide cells.

Advancements in battery technology are crucial not only for the electric vehicle market but also for various other industries, such as renewable energy storage. With the completion of the pilot line for all-solid-state batteries and the readiness of the mother line for larger cylindrical cells, Samsung SDI is positioning itself to have a significant impact on the future of battery technology.

The electrochemical advancements achieved by Samsung SDI have the potential to revolutionize the battery industry. These advancements enhance safety and increase energy capacity, making them vital for the future development of electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions.

Samsung SDI’s progress in all-solid-state batteries and the production of larger cylindrical cells represents a significant step forward in the development of advanced battery technologies. The company’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement positions it as a frontrunner in the battery industry.
